Refers to the work of a school of painters whose careers spanned the Edo period (1600-1868) to the early part of the Meiji period (1868-1912). The style is characterized by the use of traditional Japanese materials and techniques such as black or colored ink made from minerals, shells or plants and painted on paper or silk.
