Members of a subclass containing around 1,220 species of arthropod that go through several distinct swimming stages as plankton, then usually fix themselves to a rocky or other hard submerged surface as adults, having a hard shell and feeding by reaching into the water with modified legs. Classified as an infraclass in some systems.
