Short pole weapons, around 5 feet in length, having a retractable blade of either a one or three long thin points that were retracted into a hollow aperture inside the shaft. A sharp thrust of the weapon propelled the points out. The weapons were used by both infantry and civilians alike between the 16th and 19th centuries.
