Refers to religious groups in colonial Latin America that promoted Christian devotion through pious activities. They took charge of public and private activities for the benefit of the community such as paying for the mass, care of widows and orphans of deceased members, maintaining altars and images of patron saints, and processions and celebrations on holidays.
