An early photo reproductive process developed around 1890 in France, using a negative; it was abandoned in favor of simpler halftone screen techniques as they became available. In the typogravure process, the printing plate was cast from a photosensitive gelatin relief, formed when exposed to sunlight through a negative and then washed out.
