Species of medium-sized tree native to North America, having bright green elm-like leaves with three prominent veins arising from the base of the blade, and edible pea-sized purplish-black fruits attractive to birds. The bark is sometimes covered with wartlike bumps. It is easily cultured and common as a street tree, attaining heights of 12-30 meters (40-100 feet).
