Genus containing over 90 species of shrubs and small trees native to subtropical Africa and southern Asia. Seeds of several species are the source of a popular beverage. It was first cultivated in southern Arabia in the 15th century, then spread to Indonesia in the 17th century. By the 18th century, coffee plants were also being grown in Central and South America.
