Large group containing between 5,000 and 10,000 species, depending upon the classification, of mostly multicellular, marine algae, including many notable seaweeds and coralline algae. They are characterized by having eukaryotic cells without flagella and centrioles, using floridean starch as food reserve, having phycobiliproteins as accessory red pigments, lacking external endoplasmic reticulum, and using sexual reproduction.
