General term for any of four varieties of plants of the genus Erythroxylum that are indigenous to western South America and cultivated in Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan. The leaves are used with powdered lime, as a masticatory, appeaser of hunger, and stimulant of the nervous system.
