Largest class of the phylum Mollusca, consisting of about 65,000 species living in the ocean, fresh water, and on land. The name means "belly-footed," referring to the broad tapered foot on which these animals glide. Includes snails, which have a shell into which the animal can withdraw, and slugs, which differ from snails in having shells that are reduced to an internal fragment or completely lost.
