Members of a suborder containing around 11,000 species in over 2,000 genera and 8 superfamilies of insects in which the femur region of the upper hindlegs is greatly enlarged and contains large muscles that make the legs well adapted for leaping, the male able to produce a buzzing sound either by rubbing its front wings together or by rubbing toothlike ridges on the hind femurs against a raised vein on each closed front wing, ranging in color from green to olive or brown, and found in lowland tropical forests, semiarid regions, and grasslands.
