Species of coniferous spruce tree native to eastern North America, from eastern Quebec to Nova Scotia, Canada, and from New England to North Carolina, United States, reaching heights up to 40 m. It was almost lost to overharvesting, but was protected by a government act in 1911 which purchased considerable land for national forests.
