Species of elm native to the northeastern United States, similar to American elm in general appearance, but more closely related to the European wych elm, which has a very similar flower structure. It has a gluelike substance in the inner bark, which was formerly steeped in water as a remedy for throat ailments, powdered for use in poultices, and chewed as a thirst-quencher.
