Order of flowering plant containing 5 families with more than 1,100 genera and nearly 17,000 species. Many are ornamental plants or producers of drugs. Members are characterized in part by leaves that are opposite or whorled (two or more per node), with simple blades. The leaves are usually accompanied by stipules (small leaflike appendages at the base of the leaves).
