Genus containing species that are distinguished by cylindrical stalks or hollow, stemlike leaves. They are found in temperate regions and particularly in moist or shady locations. Rushes are widely used for weaving into chair bottoms, mats, and basketwork; the pith also serves as wicks in open oil lamps and for tallow candles (rushlights).
