Species of agave plant native to Mexico, where it has been a source of textile fiber since pre-Columbian times. It was introduced to Cuba in the 19th century, becoming the country's chief fiber crop by the 1920s. In addition to fiber, it is used to make a traditional Mexican alcoholic drink, licor del henequén. The plant a sterile hybrid; the ovaries never produce seeds.
