Insoluble black compound that occurs naturally as galena, the chief ore mineral of lead. It can also be synthesized by reacting a soluble lead salt with hydrogen sulfide or sodium sulfide. When crushed, lead sulfide becomes a powder which is used in photoconductive cells, and as a pigment in ceramic glaze.
