In the geologic time scale, the third period of the Paleozoic Era. It began 443.4 million years ago and ended 419.2 million years ago, following the Ordovician Period and preceding the Devonian Period. It is characterized by a rise in sea levels and a proliferation of fish species. Vascular plants colonized coastal lowlands but continental interiors were mostly devoid of life.
