Shrines erected by the side of the road as stations devoted to honor or worship of a deity or sacred figure of any faith. It may incorporate an altar or image of the deity; it may mark a crossroad. Examples include those found in ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, Japan, and in Christian Europe and the Americas. For crosses serving as roadside markers, use "wayside crosses."
