Specialized soldiers who were physically the most powerful and used to lead the charge on a battlefield or in the storming of a fortificaitons in siege warfare. Originally, as the name implies, grenadiers were the troops who threw grenades in battle; although in later usage, refers to the strongest, largest soldiers who led the charge, whether or not grenades were employed.
