Genus containing around 45 species of spiny, deep rooted trees and shrubs found in subtropical and tropical regions of the Americas, Africa, Western Asia, and South Asia. They form extensive thickets in areas from South America into the southwestern United States. Two races occur, one low (called running mesquite) and the other often growing into trees 15 m (50 feet) tall.
