Hymenaea protera
Nota de aplicación
Thought to be the ancestor of living Hymenaea species. Copal deposited from these extinct trees is highly valued for varnish. It had an extensive range, from southern Mexico and northern South America to the African continent. Studies of morphology and DNA indicate that H. protera was more closely related to the only species of Hymenaea remaining in East Africa than it is to the numerous American species.
