Order of reptiles characterized by a premaxillary downgrowth replacing premaxillary teeth and four to five teeth enlarged at beginning of palatine tooth row. Dating from the Lower Triassic to present, including three families, about 20 genera, but only one surviving genus (Sphenodon) and two living species.
