Organisms able to live and reproduce only in the presence of free oxygen; having an oxygen-based metabolism in which they utilize cellular respiration to use oxygen to oxidize substrates (for example sugars and fats) in order to obtain energy. Obligate or strict aerobes can live only in the presence of oxygen; facultative aerobes are capable of living in its absence as well as in its presence. Used especially in reference to microorganisms.
