Order containing more than 18,000 species of monocotyledons (flowering plants having a single seed leaf). The order consists of several lineages that have traditionally been recognized as groups, the members of which have often migrated from one group to another. The major groups included in Poales are the grass group (families Poaceae, Restionaceae, Anarthriaceae, Centrolepidaceae, Ecdeiocoleaceae, Flagellariaceae, and Joinvilleaceae), the cattail group (families Typhaceae and Sparganiaceae), and the sedge group (Juncaceae, Cyperaceae, and Thurniaceae). In addition, Poales includes families Xyridaceae, Eriocaulaceae, Bromeliaceae, Mayacaceae, and Rapateaceae.
