Family containing around 2,600 species of flowering plant, most native to the tropical New World and the West Indies. Most have fleshy fruit, but some produce dry pods. Bromeliads are one of the more recent plant groups to have emerged. The greatest number of primitive species reside in the Andean highlands of South America, where they originated.
