Genus containing around 12 species of tall, reedy marsh plants that bear brown, furry, fruiting spikes. They grow in a variety of wetland habitats, primarily distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere. The leaves and fiber fluff are used for a variety of purposes. Several species are edible to humans.
