Traditional accessory for the celebration of the Eucharist, consisting of a straw, which is a very narrow tube, through which the consecrated wine may be sipped from the chalice; typically made of silver or gold. The purpose of the straw was to prevent spillage of the consecrated wine; it is known from ancient times, when methods of sharing the wine included spoon, straw, and tube.
